There is a place to eat. You follow the road along the beach, it naturally moves you out the city, you will find yourself going through a tunnel, on the exit you will sea green on your left, nice country, and on your right a deep blue, big ocean. The road curves as the country roads do, you will feel gradually going inland through small hills, they block your view, and after couple of turns, it’s hard to remember which way the ocean is, but you will feel it’s behind of you. You pass couple of different villages, they are pretty and sometimes we go there to eat as well, but it’s hard to tell one from another and honestly they are nothing special. When you continue, the road get’s straighter, you should go until it’s completely flat, and you’re surrounded by trees, before the road starts to curve to the right, you will start seeing an old village on your left, between the trees, take the first turn to go in. It’s pretty great, you won’t have seen a village like this before. With it’s colored doors, big houses and courtyards that hug eachother, shitloads of plants, I love it. Keep going for about 5 mins. When you’re just about the finish the village and think you’re in farmland, you will see the remains of an old viaduct, one of the arches closed with a wooden door. The door might be open or closed, if open go in, if closed just knock.
The big table near the entrance is almost always full, usually with friends of the team, or the team it self, they are always drinking something super nice, mint lemonade, mama’s mango soda, some new-cut herbal tea, beautiful fresh wine sometimes, you have to pass throught them, and they will catch you and immidiately give you a glass of something as if it’s the new-most-awesomely-beautiful-candy a child just tried, and it usually is exactly that.
I love the tables & chairs, apparently they are from another restaurant in Brazil that closed down couple of years ago. This restaurant was on a pier, the fisherman used to bring the fish directly to the cook, fresh fresh fresh, the tables are made from exotic wood to stand the salty water, some of the best bossa nova musicians played on them when they were on their holidays, they have this patina and super smooth touch, one that comes with years of use, hands as extra smooth polishing pads. They are collapsable so must’ve been easy to move. I don’t know if they do it on purpose but there is always a different decoration on the table everytime I go, a single candle with a silver holder, two dried seahorses, colors of tomatoes, even more but I can’t remember.
It’s crazy, when you’re settled you will see the horses in the big field that reaches to the forest line, the waterway on your left, the gravel path that goes along it leads you to behind the house, and the big bench/open kitchen where all the food is prepped, made, served.
The math is simple, the food comes from the ground behind the house, usually mediterranean veggies, with some tropical products, cooked, grilled, baked in a million ways, they make different tortillas, breads and other things to go with it, no particular cuisine, I ate a killer dahl once, an extremely fresh salad with fresh plums and grilled eggplants, there was once a desert day made with quince with tahini which I would kill for. Almost always vegan, sometimes vegetarian, I heard they cook big fish for some private events with the condition that they catch the fish. Basically fresh, real food.
I love this place, the owner was didn’t tell how it all started, but did tell a lot of different stories while cooking. He told about the spices he buys from Turkey, some seeds of peppers he brought from Mexico, little comments about the french way of cooking, he detailed some things about the greek islands but I don’t remember, feeling the mediterranean fusion-vibes right? He must be in his 50’s now, his posture and the way he moves is young, but a lot of grey hair, a well lived face, polished cheeks and forehead from taking the sun all day. Try to catch him and have a chat if you can, I forgot his name but he’s super nice to talk to.
There is a very beatiful pantry with beautiful shelves, you will go through it when you follow the path that leads behind the house. It’s full of all the things they harvest, pickles, sauces, dried veggies of all sorts, and so much more I never seen anything like it. Behind the house, there are the fields, super well maintained, you can see the things you eat. I love the logo the most. It’s a metal moon & star, it’s just above the house next to the very high chimney. Impossible to miss.
You will fall in love. If you go with someone you will fall in love with them, be careful who you go with.
